Melissa Middle School has been redesignated as a Texas School to Watch by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform and the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals. This marks the school’s third consecutive three-year redesignation since its initial recognition in 2016.
The Schools to Watch program, launched in 1999, identifies exceptional middle schools that excel in academic achievement, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational effectiveness. The program has recognized over 480 schools across 19 states, showcasing how middle schools can deliver rigorous academics while fostering equity and healthy student development. These schools are celebrated as models of excellence, inspiring other campuses nationwide.
Melissa Middle School’s inclusion in this prestigious program reflects its strong leadership, collaborative teaching environment, and dedication to providing every student with a high-quality, challenging education. State Director Leticia Menchaca commended the school, “This school has demonstrated that a high-performing middle school is a place that focuses on academic growth and achievement.”
MMS Principal Melinda Keen expressed her excitement, "We are honored to be awarded this distinction. Our staff and students strive for excellence every day, and this award is a beautiful way to congratulate all stakeholders on their continued efforts to make Melissa Middle School a great place to be!"
To achieve this designation, schools undergo a rigorous evaluation, including a detailed application, site visits, classroom observations, achievement data reviews, and interviews with stakeholders. Redesignation occurs every three years, with schools required to demonstrate progress on specific goals to maintain their status.
Melissa Middle School’s selection as a Texas School to Watch underscores the commitment of Melissa ISD to providing a high standard of care and fostering a culture of academic excellence. This recognition reflects the collective effort of students, faculty, staff, parents, and the community in creating an environment where each student is encouraged to thrive academically and socially.
