Melissa High School medical assisting student practices immunization administration

Ten students from the Melissa High School medical assisting program have volunteered to administer the COVID-19 vaccine at the McKinney ISD Stadium vaccination site on Friday.

Immunization administration is part of the standard scope of the medical assisting certification program. Instructor Hallie Venner says that the opportunity to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to members of the public is an added bonus, offering students a real world, hands-on experience while also providing a service to the greater community.

On Thursday, the students practiced immunization administration in class as a refresher, in preparation for the clinic on Friday.

During the spring semester, medical assisting students shadow medical professionals on Fridays through visits to the Melissa ISD school nurses’ offices and Questcare Medical Clinic.

Medical assisting is part of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program at Melissa Schools. To learn more about Melissa CTE, visit www.melissaisd.org/cte.
