Zach Lopez, a senior at Melissa High School, is making waves in the world of karate as he represents the United States on the USA Karate Team. Ranked second in the U.S. and 23rd globally in his age and weight class by the World Karate Federation (WKF), Lopez's commitment to the sport is a testament to his passion and dedication.
For Lopez, karate is more than just a hobby—it’s a way of life. After a full day of school, he attends three-hour karate practices before continuing his studies at home. This demanding routine reflects his deep love for the sport and has driven him to compete at the highest levels.
In July, just before Nationals, Lopez sustained an injury during an event. Despite the setback, his determination to represent the United States pushed him to compete, where he secured second place in his category, earning a spot in the prestigious Pan American Championship held in São Paulo, Brazil. This marked the third time he qualified for and competed in the Pan American Championships.
Earlier this year, Lopez also earned second place at the Youth League competition in Cancun, Mexico. In 2022, he clinched the top spot at Nationals and placed 5th at the Junior & Cadet World Championships in Turkey. His global ranking continues to improve as he competes in these prestigious events.
USA Karate Director of Sport, Sensei Brody Burns, praised Lopez’s progress and resilience, saying, “I am so proud of him and very hopeful for what lies ahead. He has the talent and is growing in all the important areas, so that one day he will be a true champion for the history books.”
Currently recovering from his injury, Lopez will be out for the remainder of the year but is expected to return stronger in January for the 2025 season. His perseverance and unwavering dedication to karate showcase his remarkable resilience.
Lopez’s journey has already been impressive. His name in Melissa ISD has become synonymous with USA Karate. He embodies the spirit of hard work, talent, and dedication, qualities that have earned him the admiration of his community and peers.
Melissa High School Principal, Marcus Eckert, praised Lopez’s perseverance and character, "We are incredibly proud of his relentless pursuit of excellence on and off the mat. Zach represents the Cardinal family and the United States with distinction."
Lopez's ultimate goal is to compete in the 2032 Olympics. His work ethic and determination prove that he is ready for the long road ahead, as he continues to hone his skills and pursue his dreams on the global stage.
