In response to the rapid growth of the Melissa ISD band programs, Melissa Schools is excited to announce an expansion of its Fine Arts Department leadership. Jerry Whorton, who previously held dual roles as Director of Fine Arts and Director of Bands, has been promoted to full-time Director of Fine Arts. In this capacity, he will continue to lead and oversee the growth of all arts disciplines across the district, focusing on guiding curriculum development and spearheading initiatives to broaden the reach and impact of Melissa ISD’s Fine Arts programs.
As part of this transition, Melissa ISD has launched a nationwide search to recruit an exceptional candidate for the role of Director of Bands. This critical leadership position will oversee the vertically aligned band program for secondary schools, direct the highly successful marching band and Wind Symphony, and provide visionary leadership for the program’s future.
The Melissa Band Program supports over 670 students in grades 6-12 and has experienced over 300% growth since 2016. The band program has appeared at the Texas State Marching Contest on five occasions, advancing to finals four times and earning a Silver Medal in 2020 and a Bronze Medal in 2021.
“We are enthusiastic about the direction of our band program,” said Whorton. “As we build on our current success, we are focused on achieving even higher levels of performance and growth, including our ultimate goal of a State Championship. By fostering student development, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence, we are confident in the continued growth of our band program.”
The district will begin interviewing candidates in early December, aiming to welcome the new Director of Bands by Spring 2025.
The district plans to begin the interviewing process. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply at melissaisd.org/careers and submit a cover letter and resume to Jerry Whorton at jerrywhorton@melissaisd.org.
