Cross-Examination Debate

The Melissa High School's debate program made an impressive showing at the UIL Cross-Examination State Debate Tournament on March 21-22 at the University of Texas with two teams competing. The teams, composed of Lauren Nager and Ruby Terry, along with Hayden Maynard and Manya Kaushik, represented Melissa ISD with skill and determination at this prestigious event.

A total of 64 teams qualified for the State Tournament, with each UIL 5A district only allowed to send two teams. Both MISD teams had already achieved a remarkable feat by earning their spot at the state level.

Hayden Maynard and Manya Kaushik advanced to the elimination rounds, ultimately competing in the Octo-Finals and securing a position among the top 16 teams in the state. Their performance demonstrated strategic expertise and effective collaboration.

Lauren Nager and Ruby Terry also delivered an outstanding performance, finishing in the top three. They narrowly missed advancing to the finals, losing a close 2-1 decision in the state semifinals.

In individual honors, Lauren was named the state's top speaker, ranking first out of over 120 participants. Speakers were evaluated on their speaking abilities, with rankings assigned from 20-30. Ruby closely followed, securing the fourth position and further establishing the team's reputation for excellence in debate.

The UIL Cross-Examination Debate format involves teams of two engaging in structured debates on predetermined topics, with the top teams advancing through elimination rounds to the state championship. This competitive format highlights critical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork.

Congratulations to both teams for their exceptional performances and dedication, and to Melissa High School debate coach, Brenden Dimmig, for his unwavering commitment to guiding and supporting these students. Melissa High School’s strong showing at the UIL State Debate Tournament highlights the talent, hard work, and commitment to excellence demonstrated by these students.
