Melissa High School Junior Leads Melissa Ridge Education Center Book Fair

Brooklynn Landrum, a junior at Melissa High School, is making a difference in the lives of young learners at MREC. This spring, Brooklynn took the initiative to organize a service project for the PreK students at MREC—a book fair that will run from March 10-14.

Brooklynn, who took a leadership class last summer, contacted Willow Wood Elementary Librarian, Lori Blanscet, about her idea two months ago. She wanted to provide every PreK student with the opportunity to take home a book, aiming to spark a love for literacy in Melissa ISD’s youngest learners.

"Reading has been a very important part of my life,” shared Brooklynn. “Reading has shaped who I am, and I’m happy to be able to do this for our students!”

After reaching out for guidance, Brooklynn worked diligently to set up the book fair, including communicating with the MREC principal and organizing volunteers. She and Blanscet worked together to set up the fair, and Brooklynn has been actively running the event.

"Brooklynn is an outstanding high school student who had the idea of doing a service project for the PreK program," said Blanscet. "She took the initiative and wanted to put on a book fair for them. She wants every PreK student to have the opportunity to take a book home. She has a heart for literacy, and her leadership skills shined through with her idea, dedication, and commitment to the project."

This book fair is a true testament to Brooklynn’s leadership and her commitment to making a positive impact on the community. It serves as a reminder of the incredible things young students like Brooklynn can accomplish when they take initiative and serve their community. We look forward to seeing all the great things she will continue to achieve in the future!
