MHS Band Solo & Ensemble State Qualifiers

The Melissa High School Band earned 99 First Division ratings at the Region 25 UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest on February 22, with 83 musicians qualifying for the Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest (TSSEC) in Austin this May.

The UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest challenges students to perform either individually or in small groups for a panel of adjudicators. A First Division rating, the highest possible score, signifies exceptional musicianship. Students who memorize and perform a Class 1 solo, the most advanced category of music, qualify to compete at TSSEC. State qualifiers performed music selected from a collegiate-level repertoire, showcasing their skill and dedication.

“The UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest is more than just a competition—it’s an opportunity for students to challenge themselves, grow as musicians, and showcase their dedication to their craft. It teaches discipline, perseverance, and the importance of individual excellence while preparing them for the highest levels of musical performance,” stated Jerry Whorton, Director of Fine Arts. “We could not be more proud of our students' efforts; it shows their relentless pursuit of excellence.”

State qualifiers will perform for judges, including professional musicians and college professors. Those who earn a First Division at State receive a gold medal, and the most outstanding performers earn the distinguished title of “Outstanding Performer,” a rare honor awarded to only a select few across the state.

We are incredibly proud of our students’ achievements. Their success reflects their hard work, talent, and the strength of the Melissa High School Band program. Congratulations to all, and best of luck at TSSEC in May!
