Congratulations to the Melissa High School for earning the outstanding title of Second Runner-Up in UIL 2024 Overall State Academic Championship. The State Academic Championship goes to the school in each conference earning the highest total points earned for contestants and teams placing placing for all sanctioned UIL academic events with a state level contest, including Cross-Examination Debate, Congress, One-Act Play, Film, Theatrical Design, Robotics and the historical essay contests.
Most recently, the Academic UIL team had an amazing performance at the UIL Academic 5A State Meet at the University of Texas-Austin campus on May 13-15, 2024, where they secured 3rd place overall.
Five students competed in three different events. Tyler Mathieson and Ira Roy represented MHS in the Computer Application event. Mathieson, a two-time State Champion in this event, capped off his senior year with a third consecutive victory, becoming a three-time State Champion. Mathieson achieved the highest score across all divisions (1A-6A) in Texas! Roy earned a commendable 4th place finish, marking her second time placing at the State Meet.
Andrew Nager showcased exceptional skill and dedication in the Persuasive Speaking event, earning the title of State Runner-Up. Sarah Orejuela and Lillian Nabors proudly represented MHS in the Informative Speaking event, placing 5th and 6th respectively.
Congratulations to these talented students for their incredible hard work and achievements! Special thanks to the dedicated teachers, Doug Bingman in Computer Applications and Brenden Dimmig in Persuasive and Informative Speaking, who coached and supported these students to success at the state meet.
This incredible academic performance combined with the points from the OAP, AV Production Film, and the Robotic’s State finishes lead to the school being named Second Runner-Up in UIL 2024 State Academic Championship.
