With the Total Solar Eclipse coming up on April 8, 2024, we wanted to share the learning opportunities, safety measures, and community plan we have in place for our schools and students on that day. Our goal is to create a memorable learning experience for our Cardinals. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions:
Melissa ISD Solar Eclipse Information:
Learning Activities: Each campus will offer a variety of educational activities tailored to its students, along with safety training and appropriate eyewear. Campuses will be viewing the eclipse outside using certified ISO 12312-2 safety glasses, approved by the American Astronomical Society (AAS). In case of inclement weather, alternative indoor learning opportunities will be provided.
Safety Education: Leading up to the event, our schools have been educating students on solar eclipse safety, including the proper use of protective eyewear. The following link, Solar Eclipse Education and Safety Guidelines, provides the presentation shared with our campuses. We encourage parents to review the safety guidelines with their child and the importance of wearing the protective eyewear.
Safety Eyewear: Thanks to our partners in education, the district has been provided with certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses that comply with safety standards. It is mandatory for students to utilize these district-provided eclipse glasses for viewing the eclipse. Students are required to wear the eclipse glasses throughout the viewing period. They will be allowed to remove the glasses during totality when it is safe to view the Sun without protection. Following totality, students will promptly resume wearing their eclipse glasses.
Visitors On Campus: For the safety and focus of our students, all campuses will be closed to visitors on April 8, 2024.
Absences: As a district, Melissa ISD always encourages parents to make the best choice for their family. Absences or early dismissals will be recorded in accordance with the district attendance policy. Please be reminded that Melissa ISD students may receive a total of three (3) excused absences, by parent/guardian note, each school year. Indoor Viewing Option Form: We understand that some parents may not want their child to participate in the outdoor viewing of the solar eclipse. Parents have the option for their child to participate in an indoor viewing of the solar eclipse by completing the Indoor Viewing Option Form. The form must be completed by Thursday, April 4, 2024. Additionally, we encourage parents to discuss their decision and expectations for that day with their child.
