The Melissa High School American Sign Language program hosted a two-day event called “Cardinals ASL Nation” on Thursday and Friday, March 21-22, 2024. The event was led by ASL 3 and 4 students for ASL 1 and 2 students to attend during their individual class periods. Activities included trivia, presentations, and immersive experiences.
The event was a completely “voice-off” experience and attracted over 150 student participants. ASL 4 students spent weeks planning seven events and presentations about the Deaf Community and American Sign Language History. Activities included a presentation by a Deaf MHS senior student sharing her experience with getting a cochlear implant, a deaf/blind simulation, deaf trivia, learning food signs at a Deaf Cafe, and playing games with ASL handshapes.
ASL teacher Jennifer Glory shared her excitement about the event, saying, “It was a phenomenal day seeing the fluency of upperclassmen and watching the excitement grow for the program among ASL 1 and 2 students.”
This was an enriching opportunity for the American Sign Language program students, combining exciting activities with learning. Great job to the ASL 3 and 4 students for leading such an amazing event!
